A high-security lock resists picking, bumping and drilling, and its keys cannot be copied without your authorization. US Locksmith (Lic #00443LK) installs Medeco and Mul-T-Lock across Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach: $150–$320 for a cylinder in your current lock, $250–$500 for a new Grade 1 deadbolt.

What Makes a Lock "High-Security"?

Three things, and a real high-security lock has all three. A standard deadbolt from a hardware store usually has none.

Attack resistance

The cylinder resists picking, bump keys and drilling. The benchmark is UL 437, a test for pick, drill and forced-entry resistance.

Physical strength

The lock body resists kicking and prying. Look for ANSI/BHMA Grade 1, the highest residential and commercial grade.

Key control

Keys use a patented blank that only an authorized dealer can cut, and only for the registered owner. This is what a "Do Not Duplicate" stamp cannot do.

Medeco or Mul-T-Lock: Which One Fits Your Door?

Choose Medeco when force resistance and fast local service matter most; choose Mul-T-Lock when strict control over who can copy a key matters most. We are an authorized dealer for both, so we recommend the one that fits the door and the situation.

How Much Do High-Security Locks Cost in South Florida?

High-security upgrades run $150–$320 for a retrofit cylinder and $250–$500 for a new Grade 1 deadbolt, installed with two registered keys.

Service call / trip charge$29
High-security cylinder fitted into your existing lock$150–$320
High-security Grade 1 deadbolt, supplied and installed$250–$500
Additional registered key$25–$70
Keying another door to match (per door)$90–$190
Master key system, 3–6 doors$650–$1,600

Ranges cover both brands. A cylinder retrofit takes 20–40 minutes; a new deadbolt takes 45–90 minutes. Every high-security installation carries a 1-year labor warranty, plus the manufacturer's warranty on the hardware.

Which Other High-Security Brands Do We Install?

Besides Medeco and Mul-T-Lock, where we are an authorized dealer, we install and service the other leading high-security systems:

ASSA Twin

Side-pin and sidebar design with strong drill resistance. Common in commercial and institutional buildings.

Abloy Protec2

Rotating-disc design with no springs or pins, highly resistant to picking. Popular for commercial doors, gates and padlocks.

Schlage Primus

Sidebar cylinders with patented keys that fit existing Schlage hardware — a common upgrade for buildings already on Schlage.

For these brands, registered key copies are ordered through each manufacturer's authorized channel, and we coordinate that for you. Want electronic access instead of keys? See smart lock installation.

Who Needs a High-Security Lock?

  • New homeowners and condo buyers — you cannot know how many keys to the old lock exist.
  • Landlords — tenants, agents and contractors come and go; registered keys stop copies from leaving with them.
  • Businesses — offices, retail stores and medical practices where employees change and one room holds the real risk.
  • Oceanfront and high-rise owners — where the right finish and a strong lock both matter.

Most of our high-security work is in Brickell, Miami Beach, Aventura, Sunny Isles, Coral Gables, Fort Lauderdale and Boca Raton, and we cover every city in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach.

Why the Door Frame Matters as Much as the Lock

A high-security cylinder is only as strong as the door around it. Most forced entries in South Florida break the frame, not the lock: short strike-plate screws in a soft wood jamb give way long before a Grade 1 bolt does. That is why we check the strike plate and the frame on every installation and reinforce them where needed, usually with three-inch screws into the stud. It costs little and decides whether the lock can do its job.

High-Security Master Key Systems for Businesses

A master key system gives the owner one key that opens every door, while each employee's key opens only their own areas. On a high-security platform, those keys also cannot be copied without your authorization, so a key that leaves with an employee can be cut out of the system with a rekey instead of a full lock change. See our commercial locksmith page for panic bars, access control and full business security.

Do Condo Associations and Insurers Accept These Brands?

Yes. Many Miami condo buildings require board or management approval for door hardware visible from the hallway. Medeco and Mul-T-Lock are brands boards and property managers recognize, and we match the existing finish and provide the product sheets your board will ask for. Some insurers also look favorably on high-security locks; ask your agent whether your policy offers a credit.

Typical Situations We Handle

Sunny Isles oceanfront unit, salt air

Doors that face the ocean take salt spray every day, and polished-brass hardware starts pitting within two seasons. We specify satin chrome high-security hardware, which holds its finish in salt air, and recommend a cylinder service every two to three years.

Medical office in Coral Gables, one room that matters

The front door can run on standard keys, but the supply room should open for the doctor and the office manager only. We install a single high-security cylinder on that door, keyed separately from the rest. It is the cheapest way to protect the one room that holds the risk.

High-Security Lock Questions

Is a high-security lock worth it for a single-family home?
For the front door, usually yes. A retrofit cylinder costs $150–$320 and gives you a key no one can copy without your authorization. For a home with several outside doors, many owners upgrade the main entrance and key the rest to match.
Can a high-security cylinder be keyed to match my other locks?
Yes. We key every high-security cylinder on your property to one registered key, at $90–$190 for each additional door. You carry one key, and it still cannot be copied without your authorization.
What is a restricted keyway?
A key profile whose blanks are sold only to authorized dealers, often protected by a patent. A hardware store cannot buy the blank, so it cannot copy the key. Medeco and Mul-T-Lock both use patented restricted keyways.
Do high-security locks need special maintenance in salt air?
A little. Choose satin chrome or a stainless-look finish instead of polished brass near the water, and have the cylinder serviced every two to three years. Inland, normal care is enough.
Can you upgrade just the front door and leave the rest?
Yes, and it is a common starting point. We fit a high-security cylinder on the front door now, and can key the other doors to the same registered key later, at $90–$190 per door.
